Chip Kelly to Northwestern: New Head Coach

Chip Kelly, who began the 2025 season as offensive coordinator for the Las Vegas Raiders before being fired, has been hired in the same position by the Northwestern University Wildcats, reports ESPN.

The school viewed Kelly as someone who could adapt to different types of players and help optimize an offense ranked 96th nationally in both total offense and scoring offense.

Northwestern finished 15th in the Big Ten Conference in points per game during the regular season (22.5).

Kelly will replace current coordinator Zach Lujan, whose contract expires shortly after the season. He joins current head coach David Braun, who has two wins in three seasons at the university.

The university will break ground on the new Ryan Field next year with an offensive coordinator who had great success at Ohio State in 2024, winning a national championship with the Buckeyes.

Kelly was a two-time head coach in the NCAA, at Oregon and UCLA, and twice in the NFL, at Philadelphia and San Francisco. He brings expertise in various systems and personnel, which appealed to Northwestern.
