Chiesa refused to play for the Italian national team several times. The 28 year old winger chose to remain at Liverpool in order to achieve full fitness.
Chiesa has not played for the Italian national team since Euro 2024. He last started in Italy’s 0-2 defeat against Switzerland in the Round of 16.
“There was direct contact from the coach, as happened with other players who have been part of the team,” Bonucci told Sky Sport Italia.
“We are monitoring all the players in Italy and abroad. The coach has communicated in real and direct terms with Federico, who said he wants to be fully fit to be ready to play for the national team.”
“He is among the players who may be called up for the playoffs, but we will discuss this at the beginning of February, in the hope that all the players called up will be fully fit,” confirmed Bonucci.
