The Kansas City Chiefs, a National Football League (NFL) team, announced on the 23rd that they have decided to build a new home stadium with the goal of moving in 2031.

The Chiefs plan to build and relocate to a domed stadium near ‘The Legends’, a commercial district on the west side of Kansas City.

It is currently located approximately 23 miles (approximately 37 km) from Arrowhead Stadium.

What’s interesting is that the state line runs between these two.

As a result, the Chiefs will leave Missouri and make their home in Kansas, even though they are not leaving Kansas City.

Founded as the Dallas Texans in 1960, the Chiefs moved to Kansas City in 1963 and have been based in Missouri ever since.

This is because Kansas City is a ‘twin city’ that straddles the border of two states. Also, contrary to its name, the Missouri side can be said to be a bigger city than the Kansas side.

“We have always been Chiefs fans, and now we are part of the Chiefs family,” said Kansas Governor Laura Kelly.

Until 2015, Missouri had two NFL teams, the Chiefs and Rams.

However, the Rams left for Los Angeles (LA) in 2016 and are now in danger of leaving the Chiefs as well.

Missouri Governor Mike Keough said, “We will not give up on the Chiefs. We will find a show-me solution to change the Chiefs’ minds.”

The Chiefs have used Arrowhead Stadium as their home stadium since 1972.

Naturally, even after several renovations, all traces of time have not been erased.

It is also difficult for the Kansas City area to host the Super Bowl (NFL championship game) due to the cold weather and lack of infrastructure.

Accordingly, the Chiefs club is trying to solve this problem by building a dome stadium.

Lamar Hunt (1932-2006), the first owner of the Chiefs, said, “Whether you’re in Missouri or Kansas, if you say, ‘I’m from Kansas City,’ most people will talk about the Chiefs.”

However, Missouri is now in a position where it is difficult to catch the Chiefs with just the slogan, ‘Chiefs are Kansas City’s team.’
