Two teenagers were arrested after being accused of starting a fire in the bathrooms and causing serious damage at the Pelican Baseball Complex in Cape Coral.
On Wednesday morning, Cape Coral Police responded to the complex located at 4128 Pelican Boulevard.
According to the Cape Coral Police Department (CCPD), a city ranger was alerted by a team to extensive damage to the park’s restrooms.
CCPD reported that a fire had started in the men’s and women’s bathrooms. Sinks, soap dispensers and toilet paper dispensers were also ripped from the walls and left smashed on the floor.
Burnt objects were also thrown into toilets.
According to CCPD, security cameras showed a boy and a girl entering the bathrooms at approximately 2:05 a.m., and smoke was observed coming from the bathrooms shortly after.
The suspects were identified as PW, 16, and KM, 15; However, the police had not yet located them.
CCPD said it received more reports of arson on Thursday, when the suspects returned to the Pelican Baseball Complex and set fire to several trash cans, burning a wooden table and an American flag. According to police, the fire caused significant damage to a city building between the baseball fields.
Books from an outdoor library near the playground were burned, and there were signs of vandalism both inside and outside the facility.
Yandel Abreu, who practices with the Ace Elite Baseball team, expressed his disbelief, saying: “Terrible. I don’t know why people do this. I’ve never seen anything like this here or there.”
According to the statement, on Thursday the teens also went to the Cape Christian Church and set fire to a T-shirt and a sign.
In the afternoon, police received a call from someone in Cape Christian reporting that the teens had returned.
Chris Stroka, Cape Christian’s director of business operations, described the damage to the church saying, “They lit a fire on a metal platform. They damaged a T-shirt, a sign. I think they were just hanging out with fire on our street.”
Despite the incident, Cape Christian continues its Christmas tradition.
Stroka said, “We have a lot of eyes and ears on Christmas Village to provide a safe environment. We also had CCPD help with some details over the weekend. So yes, we love providing a safe place for families to come and enjoy Christmas.”
Cape Coral detectives responded and arrested Wand M. According to the report, M had 54 grams of marijuana and W possessed alcohol and a THC vape pen.

- 1 count of desecration of a flag
- 1 count of possession of a controlled substance
- 1 count of possession of alcohol while under 21 years of age
