Burkina Faso AFCON: Ajax Stars Shine

Burkina Faso has achieved victory in the African Cup of Nations in the absolute final phase. In the 94th minute, Equatorial Guinea enjoyed a 0-1 lead, but it was given away by goals in the 95th and 98th minute: 2-1. Former Ajax players Bertrand Traoré and Lassana Traoré, among others, were given playing minutes. Algeria was much too strong for Sudan on Wednesday: 3-0.

Algeria – Sudan 3-0

Algeria started the match against Sudan strongly and took the lead in the second minute through Riyad Mahrez, who made it 1-0 with his left leg. The Algerian striker immediately became his country’s all-time top scorer at the African Cup.

In the second, Mahrez decided the game definitively by also scoring the 2-0, after a good attack and cool finish. In the final phase, Ibrahim Maza made the final score 3-0 from close range. Anis Hadj Moussa and Ramiz Zerrouki started on the bench, but the duo was allowed to come on in the second half.

Burkina Faso – Equatoriaal-Guinea 2-1

Due to an unfortunate foul by Basilio Ndong, Equatorial Guinea found itself at 0-0 with ten men five minutes after half-time. Burkina Faso failed to benefit from its numerical superiority for a long time, while Equatorial Guinea did strike.

Five minutes before the end of regular playing time, Marvin Anieboh scored the 0-1, which seemed to give the country victory. Nothing turned out to be further from the truth. Deep into injury time, Georgi Minoungou made it 1-1, after which Edmond Tapsoba of Bayer Leverkusen also made it 2-1 in the absolute final second.
