Latvian athletes Elīna Ieva Bota and Kendija Aparjode took eighth and ninth place in the first stage of the World Cup luge on Sunday, Zane Kaluma was 16th, and Margita Sirsniņa ranked 24th.
Austrian Hanna Prock won the sum of two races, who after winning the first race kept the lead and beat the German Merle Froebel by three hundredths of a second, who was the fastest in the second race. Austrian Dorothea Schwartz was third, 0.209 seconds behind her compatriot.
Botha lost 0.513 seconds to the winner and was 0.014 seconds ahead of Aparjode. Kaluma was almost a second slower.
In the first race, Botha was the third fastest behind Schwartz and Proka, Aparjode had the 11th result, and Kaluma – the 16th place.
Sirsniņa showed the 24th result in the first race, ahead of the sled driver from Estonia. The Latvian lost more than one second to the top 20 who qualified for the second race.
In the second race, Bota did not manage to reach the speed, moreover, mistakes in the second part of the track allowed him to reach the 14th result. In contrast, Aparjode was sixth fastest to help make the climb, while Kaluma was 17th.

The athletes were supposed to run the first stage at the Austrian track in Eagles, but the renovated track was not good enough to hold the competition, and the stage was moved to Winterberg.
There are nine stages in the World Cup (WC) competition this season. The next two stages of PK will take place on the US tracks in Park City and Lake Placid, but a stage in Sigulda is planned for the turn of the year. After the fifth stage, the Olympic qualification will end in Winterberg at the beginning of January, but in the first of two stages, on another German track in Oberhof, the medals of the European Championship will also be distributed, with the athletes competing in the Milan-Cortina d’Ampezzo Olympic Games in early February.
