The deception was great for trainer Peter Bosz. “It’s disappointing. We had three chances to get the points we needed to progress. That’s what it’s all about in the end. We didn’t take the first chance. I thought most of the match was for them, but it could have been done. If one of those last two chances (for substitutes Armando Obispo and Ricardo Pepi, ed.) comes through, we would have had another evening like the one I have experienced here before in the Champions League. Dead and buried and still a result. It just wasn’t.”

Bosz thought Atletico’s victory was well deserved. “I thought we weren’t good enough in football. I think they rightly won, because they controlled most of the match. It started for us with a great goal from us and then another great chance from the same one Cou. He was our most dangerous attacker. But then they took matters into their own hands. They press very aggressively with a lot of intensity. We had a lot of trouble with that. Normally we play football under that. If you don’t do that, it becomes dangerous.”
Bosz: “That first goal was of course bad in the build-up. We didn’t get to play football anymore until the end of the match. Then we unexpectedly got back into the match and had the chance to equalize twice. It could have ended very nicely if Obi (Obispo, ed.) had tapped in that ball. Then you could have said that it all turned out well.”
After a strong start, PSV eventually lost to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League
After Julian Alvarez’s equalizer in the 37e minute PSV threatened to collapse. “I saw some uncertainty in some of them. Then you start running with the ball. That leads to losing the ball and that does something to your self-confidence. A goal like that doesn’t help either. At the end of the first half we had no grip at all and I was happy that it was half time,” said Bosz, who tried to make some conversions.
Alexander Sorloth
The PSV coach saw that his team did not know what to do with the play of Alexander Sorloth, the point of contact that Atletico used to escape from the pressure. “Under our high pressure, she played long balls to Sorloth. We didn’t have a header who won the matches against him and all the second balls were for them. We didn’t really manage to solve that well.”

It was quiet in the PSV dressing room afterwards. Bosz did briefly address his players. “Afterwards I said that this was educational again. To see how well they are doing. That’s what we’ve been doing for two and a half years. Learn from something and get better. This is the real top. We played against that today and lost. We have to learn from playing against the best. We have done that in the past. And also added our own things. And we are also trying to do that with this match, so that we do better the next time we play against such a team,” said the PSV coach.
Bosz was impressed with how Atletico played. “They really made it difficult for us to play football. That’s really nice. When you see how they came and how aggressive they were. That really is the quality of a top team.”
