BG 74 Göttingen dominated the top game against Osnabrück at will. The strong defense decided the game at halftime.
No, the BBC Osnabrück, third in the table in the second basketball Bundesliga, certainly imagined things differently. Leaders BG 74 Veilchen Ladies Göttingen threw the guests out of the FKG hall with a 74:43 (41:23) victory, which amounted to a humiliation for their Lower Saxony rivals and at least a class difference.
“It was a terrible game,” was the surprising spontaneous reaction of BG 74 coach Ruzica Djankic immediately after the final siren – that is, a terrible, beautiful game. “We won this game on defense,” she added. The guests’ offensive actions often seemed completely helpless, so that Osnabrück ended up with a shocking statistic of just 25 percent – 25 out of 60 throws. Djankic also said that her team’s hit rate was a bit weak, but in the end the shooting rate of 42 percent – 27 out of 64 – was quite impressive.
The game started with two successful three-pointers from Sophia Phillips to make it 6-0. And by the end of the first quarter, the almost 400 spectators – including BG playmaker Jordan Sears, who passed the time with the kids during the halftime break by throwing baskets – were already cheering about the Veilchen Ladies’ 18:10 lead, which was able to extend it to 41:23 at the halftime siren.
The BG 74 were even able to afford a total of 24 ball losses (Osnabrück 18) without being able to endanger the victory in any way. Added to this was the superiority of the baskets by Thalia Kretschmar with nine, Alice Bremer with eight and Katherine Peneueta with seven rebounds. The BG 74 won the rebound ratio with 43:30. The Violet Ladies more or less let the last quarter coast to a halt.
Meanwhile, it was announced that national player and ex-BG player Jennifer Crowder, daughter of Veilchen managing director Richard Crowder and most recently with the Italian second division club Basket Costa, has now joined the Bundesliga club Herner TC.
