Best Opponent: A Champion’s Respect

Ibrahim Afellay is absolutely not impressed by the Dutch national team’s World Cup draw. During the long draw, the Dutch team was paired with Japan, Tunisia and the winner of the play-off of Poland, Sweden, Ukraine or Albania.

Afellay is not at all impressed by the opponents of the Dutch national team. “We have to say that we should be able to survive this group, right?” he wonders out loud after seeing the draw for the Dutch team. “You can hit it harder. These are not the strongest countries on paper,” he continues.

Jeroen Elshoff mainly fears the round after the group stage. “The biggest problem is if you come first or second, you will face Brazil or Morocco. The sequel is almost more interesting than the group itself,” says the NOS commentator.

Afellay ‘fears’ Japan the most. “The average Japanese player is technically well gifted and wants to play football, so I think that is by far the strongest opponent in the group. If you just look at the players from the Eredivisie such as Ayase Ueda, Kodai Sano, Tsuyoshi Watanabe and Koki Ogawa,” said the former Dutch international.
