Bernardo Tavares: Persebaya Move & Shin Tae-yong’s Ex-Assistant Future

KOMPAS.com – Persebaya Surabaya officially appointed Bernardo Tavares as head coach to continue the 2025-2026 Super League season.

This decision was taken after management ended cooperation with Eduardo Perez on November 22 2025 following a series of previous match results.

Since then, Persebaya Surabaya has undergone a transition period with a temporary coach. Uston Nawawi led the team in the match against Bhayangkara FC and PSM Makassar.

In the next match against Borneo FC, this task was continued by Shin Sang-gyu, Shin Tae-yong’s former assistant in the Indonesian National Team.

This situation continued until management announced Tavares as the new coach on Sunday (22/12/2025) evening.

Even though it has been officially announced, Bernardo Tavares has not yet arrived in Surabaya.

The coach from Portugal is still in his country to celebrate Christmas and New Year with his family.

After almost four seasons in Makassar, Tavares chose to take advantage of this break before starting his new assignment in the Super League.

Following Tavares’ appointment, questions arose regarding the composition of Persebaya’s coaching staff.

One of the main issues is whether Tavares will bring in his own assistants and how the existing staff will be positioned.

Persebaya media officer, Yonathan Yohvinno, provided an explanation regarding this condition.

“Coach hasn’t arrived in Surabaya yet,” said Yohvinno.

“But we have monitored all Persebaya matches and also mapped the team’s condition.”

“So that when he comes, he will know what to do.”
