We haven’t seen Steven Berghuis in action at Ajax for a while. There are also hardly any sounds around him and so one actually starts to wonder where the veteran has gone. Remarkably, the left-footed signed for another two years, but people are now questioning that.
Question marks surrounding Ajax player Steven Berghuis
Many wonder about Berghuis’s physical condition, but people also wonder whether the veteran has any mental or private problems. “Seriously: where has Berghuis gone? No one talks about him, no one sees him, no longer shares anything on social media. It seems as if he has completely disappeared from the face of the earth?”
Which, according to many, makes it even crazier that Berghuis was allowed to extend his contract for another two years. For example, several people have suggested that it might be better for Ajax to terminate Berghuis’ contract. “No one misses him either. But it is remarkable… Makes his contract extension even more incomprehensible,” it says, among other things. And: “If he continues to be absent, then we should discuss contract termination.” And: “Can’t we just fire Berghuis/terminate the contract?”
Rafael van der Vaart opens the book
However, according to Rafael van der Vaart, Berghuis appears to still be actively present at Ajax. In the Grab Scale Podcast says the former international: “Berghuis… I hear that from my son (Damián, ed.) and a lot of people don’t know that, but it might be nice to tell them. So Berghuis is very busy with those young boys. He always asks how much they have played and he has been involved with those boys for years.”
“Damián says that and then I think: yes, it’s a shame, because if he plays badly I want to be able to give him a slap on the ears. No, I really like that he does that,” continues the former international of the Dutch national team. Van der Vaart still thinks Berghuis is a top player: “In my opinion, he is still the best at Ajax. It’s a shame that he has many injuries. You really need him.”
