Benin Football: Historic First Win in Final Phase

For the first time in its history, Benin, winner against Botswana (1-0), won a CAN match.

Yohan Roche scored the winning goal, deflected by the goalkeeper, giving Benin its first success in the final phase of the African Cup of Nations (1-0) against Botswana on Saturday in Rabat. Benin now has three points after its first two matches and finds itself tied with Senegal and the Democratic Republic of Congo in the standings. The latter two face each other in Tangier that same day for their second group match.

First victory in the final phase after 16 attempts

Benin opened the scoring in the 28th minute. Roche combined with captain Steve Mounie in the area, and his shot from 10 meters, deflected by a defender, ended up in the back of the net. Benin finally celebrated its first victory in the continental finals at its 16th attempt, after its debut in 2004, despite a quarter-finalist place in 2019. Its record is also five draws for ten defeats.
