Benfica is currently studying the loan of Andreas Schjelderup to ensure that the Norwegian winger, who is only 21 years old, continues to develop.
Although José Mourinho is very satisfied with the commitment shown by the player to the coach’s ideas, and above all with the defensive availability he has shown on the field, the movements in this winter market advise the Eagles’ football structure to change the initial plan for the young Nordic, which involved keeping him in the squad. There are several clubs paying attention to the situation of the young striker, with journalist Sacha Tavolieri referring, in the last few hours, to an approach from Roma.
Sudakov’s arrival in the summer has already reduced the space for Schjelderup, as both have strong characteristics to start from the left in more interior movements on the field; the imminent signings of Sidny Cabral, from Estrela da Amadora, and André Luiz, from Rio Ave, increase the chances that Andreas Schjelderup will have even less competition in the future. Sidny is a full-back with the ability to play as a winger on both flanks and the same happens with André Luiz, a right-winger prepared to play several roles in the attack. And we must not forget that in February, at the latest in March, winger Dodi Lukebakio is expected to be recovered from injury and ready to return to the coach’s options.
Hired in January 2023 from Danish side Nordsjaelland, for €9 million plus bonuses that increase the value to close to €14 million, Schjelderup has not yet achieved full success at Benfica, but is seen as a young player with room to grow, as evidenced by the systematic interest that has existed from several European clubs. Schjelderup has received surveys from clubs in the Netherlands, Belgium and Turkey, among other destinations.
This season, the striker scored two goals and made three assists in 21 games, 10 as a starter. He has a contract until 2028 and a release clause of 100 million euros, a value that illustrates the hope that Benfica has in the development of Andreas Schjelderup. In this sense, the Reds’ SAD should prioritize a loan in January. The definitive sale of the Nordic winger should only be considered if a truly interesting offer arises for Benfica and the player.
Schjelderup wanted and was convinced that this would be Benfica’s breakthrough season, but it is not going well.
