Bayern Fans: UEFA Sanctions & Trouble

UEFA is once again taking action against FC Bayern and once again the fans are standing Munich in the focus of the disciplinary watchdog. Three violations of the rules now led to severe penalties.

FC Bayern is once again the focus of the UEFA disciplinary bodies. After the 3-1 defeat in the Champions League away game at Arsenal FC at the Emirates Stadium, the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body has now officially confirmed that there were three violations of the rules by Bayern fans traveling with them during the game. The consequence: fines totaling 70,000 euros.

The after-effects of the game extend far beyond the sporting events. Even before kick-off, there were heated scenes in the away area. According to UEFA, there were riots, the throwing of objects and the display of messages and banners that were deemed inappropriate for a sporting event.

Specifically, UEFA imposed a fine of 40,000 euros for rioting and throwing objects. A further 30,000 euros were due because FC Bayern fans were said to have shown offensive or unauthorized messages. The incidents mostly occurred before the start of the game in the visitors’ block, where there were clashes with stewards. As a result, the police even had to intervene to bring the situation under control.

This decision is particularly explosive for FC Bayern, as the club is already under special observation by UEFA. In recent months there have been several similar incidents at international away games that have impacted Munich’s disciplinary account.

After the massive pyrotechnic incidents in the CL home game against Sporting Lisbon, UEFA imposed sanctions against FCB just a few days ago and closed parts of the south curve for the upcoming CL duel against Union Saint-Gilloise (January 21, 2026). A fine of 30,000 euros was also imposed.

FC Bayern had already been punished in February 2024 after an away game at Lazio Rome after fans set off pyrotechnics and threw objects. There were also similar offenses in the group game in Copenhagen in October 2023. At that time, UEFA even announced a suspended away ban, which could have been activated in the event of further incidents.

Against this background, the renewed sanction is likely to cause alarm internally. The club faces the challenge of, on the one hand, honoring the passionate support of its fans, but on the other hand, preventing further escalations. Any further anomalies could lead to significantly harsher consequences in the future – including partial exclusions or ghost games from international competitions.
