The Korea Basketball Association is publicly hiring a coach to assist coach Nicolas Majuls, the first foreign coach in history.
The Basketball Association said in a press release on the 15th, “The Performance Improvement Committee (Chairman Yoo Jae-hak) decided to publicly recruit a leader (coach) to lead the men’s national basketball team along with coach Nicolais Majuls through the 11th Performance Improvement Committee meeting held on the 12th.”
This open recruitment is being conducted to discover a wide range of capable leaders with both expertise and leadership as part of the formation of leaders to strengthen the mid- to long-term competitiveness of the men’s national basketball team. The selected coaches will participate in overall national team training and game operations, and will play a key role in developing players and strengthening the team’s power.
The recruitment field is one leader (coach) of the men’s national basketball team, and document submissions will be held until 18:00 on January 11th. After document screening, the final selection is made through interview evaluation, board deliberation, and the Korean Sports Council approval process.
To be eligible to apply, applicants must meet the national team leader qualification requirements according to the ‘National Team Selection and Operation Regulations’ and there must be no grounds for disqualification under the Association’s Articles of Incorporation and related regulations. The contract period is from the date of approval by the Korea Sports Council until December 31, 2027, and the contract can be extended depending on the evaluation results.

On the 5th, the Basketball Association appointed Coach Majuls from Latvia, a ‘powerful basketball nation in Eastern Europe’, as the new head coach of the men’s national team. He is the first foreign head coach of Korean men’s basketball.
Born in 1980, Coach Majuls is a coach with approximately 20 years of leadership experience. Starting with the Latvian youth team, he led the Latvian national team at various age levels and gained extensive experience in the Russian league, Latvian-Estonian league, and Lithuanian league.
Coach Majuls said, “I know that this is the first foreign coach in Korean basketball history, and it is a great honor for me personally. I know how important the national team is, and I also know that many people expect it to regain its past competitiveness,” and pledged, “I will do my best to help the national team regain its past competitiveness and advance to the World Cup stage and even the Olympic stage.”
The Basketball Association announced that it aims to win a gold medal at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games and advance to the 2028 LA Olympics through the appointment of a foreign coach.
