Basketball fans, get ready for a new season of insights from a familiar face.
“Basketball & Conversations”, the popular LBATV series, is back, and this
time, Italian basketball legend Andrea Bargnani is stepping into the host’s
shoes. Known for his sharp mind both on and off the court, Bargnani, an LBA
Executive Advisor, will be sitting down with LBA team owners and managers to
explore the business side of the sport. It’s a captivating look into the
minds of those who invest their passion and capital into professional
basketball.
The inaugural episode features a candid conversation with Luigi Datome,
Coordinator of the Men’s National Teams Sector. Datome, who spent time
playing overseas, shared some of the frequently enough-unseen challenges that come with
living the professional athlete’s life abroad. “The concept of beauty and all
that glitters always passes through the NBA,” Datome reflected, acknowledging
the allure of playing in such a high-profile league.”As those who looked
at us saw that we were over there, in a more than dreamed world, and
thus we had to be happy, even considering the truly lovely
context.”
However, Datome emphasized that the realities of daily life can be starkly
different. “The problems in life are different, but then everyone has to deal
with their own personal dynamics in everyday life,” he explained. “I,for
example,I lived months and months without playing and,as a professional, you
want to play. The hotels are nice, the away games are cool, the cities make
you say wow, but then as a basketball player you tend to want to play.” This
sentiment resonates with many athletes who prioritize game time and
contribution over the superficial perks of their profession.
Bargnani echoed these feelings, drawing from his own experiences. “For me it
was difficult at certain times to find myself in Toronto,” he admitted,
recalling periods of team struggles or franchise complexities. “And then when
you come home in the evening and you are entirely alone, perhaps it is indeed a
period in which you don’t have a girlfriend, you don’t have a family member,
you don’t have friends, you can’t even call, as there’s a time
difference. So you just have to deal with yourself.” This highlights the
profound psychological toll that isolation and professional uncertainty can
take on athletes, even those in the spotlight.
Both Bargnani and Datome have transitioned into new roles within the
basketball world, demonstrating a continued commitment to the sport. Datome
shared his thought process when considering his post-playing career. “When I
was about to stop thinking about what to do next,” he commented, “I was also
attracted by the idea of doing something completely different, to have new
challenges, get back into the game, see another world.”
Though, the wealth of experience gained throughout their careers proved too
valuable to discard. “then I also thought that it was a shame to ‘throw away’
everything we had accumulated as experience in one world, the reputation, the
knowledge we had, seeing basketball models, clubs, structures, championships of
a certain level,” Datome continued. “so I said to myself ‘Come on, I’ll give
myself a chance’.” This perspective underscores the enduring impact of
deep-seated expertise and the desire to contribute to the game’s evolution.
