The Valencian tennis player Bernabe Zapata announced this Tuesday his retirement from professional tennis at 28 years old through a message on his official Instagram profile in which he asked for “forgiveness” and highlighted the lack of “hunger and motivation”.
The Valencian, after publicly confirming his decision to abandon professional tennis, wanted to ask “forgiveness” to the people who, according to him, have “disrespected over the past few years.”
“Tennis is very demanding and often pushes you to the limit. I think that many times I did not act correctly with the people around me”said Zapata, who also shared the reasons for his decision at the age of 28.

“I feel and know that I am still young, but after a lifetime playing I am no longer willing to continue making the sacrifice that is required to be an elite player. “I don’t have the same hunger nor the motivation that a player needs to improve day by day,” he explained.
Zapata became number 37 in the world ranking in 2023. A year earlier he beat the American John Isner in the third round of Roland Garros and fell in the fourth against Alexander Zverev, which led him to be considered one of the new emerging figures of national tennis.
