Antwerp wants to strengthen itself, and not just a little, during the upcoming winter transfer window. And to do this, Marc Overmars could turn to a well-known name in Bosuil.
According to information from the Gazette of AntwerpAntwerp could indeed try to bring back to Bosuil a certain Gaston Ávila (24 years old), who played for the Great Old during the 2022-2023 season. He was one of the executives of the cup-championship double won by Antwerp that year.
Following this good season, Ávila landed a nice transfer to Antwerp for 12.5 million euros, but the Argentinian did not meet expectations… and even caused a rupture of his cruciate ligaments in January 2024.
Gaston Ávila returning to Antwerp?
Gaston Ávila has returned from injury, but is regaining his sporting health on loan at the Brazilian club Fortaleza. He has played 34 games there this year and made a strong impression. Fortaleza has a purchase option, but various clubs, notably FC Sao Paulo, are interested.
However, Ávila would favor a return to Europe, and Antwerp would therefore be a real possibility. The player himself really enjoyed his first stint in Belgium and would therefore be very interested. The conditions remain to be determined.
Indeed, Antwerp would study the possibility of a new loan for the Argentine defender, who can play in central defense as well as in the left-back position. But Ajax wants the player’s salary to be largely covered, which complicates negotiations.
