Disciplinary Council of the Portuguese Football Federation imposes fine on Benfica player
The Disciplinary Board of the Portuguese Football Federation imposed a fine of 510 euros on António Silva, Benfica’s central defender, for criticizing the refereeing at the end of the game against Casa Pia, on the 11th round of the League.
The process was motivated by a complaint from APAF (Portuguese Association of Football Referees), which also motivated a reaction from the Players’ Union, in defense of the Portuguese international.
Played on November 9th, in Luz, Benfica-Casa Pia ended in a 2-2 draw, with the visiting team scoring in the 90+1 minute, through Renato Nhaga.
The reason for the Eagles’ greatest indignation was, however, Casa Pia’s first goal, following a penalty punishing António Silva’s handball. Trubin even saved Cassiano’s conversion, but Tomás Araújo ended up scoring an own goal.
At the end of the game, speaking to BTV, António Silva criticized the refereeing:
«This weekend it became clear what is happening in our football. What the protocol says is that if the ball bounces well and goes to the hand. It’s not a penalty. I can’t understand how the referee ends up deciding that it’s a penalty against us. Of course, afterwards they still make it 2-2, but the refereeing is very conditioned, and this weekend it became clear
A month later, the Disciplinary Board’s decision came: the Benfica player must pay a fine of 510 euros.
