The drama is immense. Victim of a terrible road accident this Monday in Nigeria, boxer Anthony Joshua lost two of his closest friends. Although the Briton was only slightly injured and taken to hospital, his coaches Sina Ghami and Kevin “Latz” Ayodele died instantly. The first was his physical trainer, the second his personal coach.
The tragic accident occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway at Makun, when the car in which the boxer was a passenger rammed into a truck. Placed behind the driver, Anthony Joshua avoided the worst, unlike his two friends installed on the right of the vehicle. According to a statement from Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the car “appears to have driven above the speed limit on this stretch” of road. An investigation is underway.

In a press release, the Briton’s promoter, Matchroom Boxing, confirmed the death of the two coaches. “It is with deep and immense sadness that we confirm the death of Sina Ghami and Kevin Latif Ayodele, following a road accident that occurred today in Lagos, Nigeria,” we read. Both were close friends and integral members of Anthony’s team. »
The boxer’s state of health would not be worrying. “We respectfully ask that families be given the space and privacy necessary to deal with this truly shocking and devastating news,” the statement continued. Anthony was injured in the accident and was taken to hospital for examination and treatment. His condition is stable and he will remain under observation. »
If “minor” injuries were mentioned by the local police, the damage could however be more serious. According to the Daily Mail, sources close to Joshua even mentioned a rib and knee injury. Enough to compromise the next few months of his career.
Since Monday, several boxers have already paid tribute to the victims, such as Chris Eubank Jr. “Let us pray for the two fallen soldiers, Latz and Sina, as well as for their families. I knew them both… They were really good men. Rest in peace, guys,” he wrote on X. “Life is more important than boxing. I pray for the victims, AJ, and all those affected by today’s tragic accident,” reacted Jake Paul, the Briton’s last opponent.
