“Anthony Joshua was sitting behind the driver and there was another person next to him, there was also a passenger sitting next to the driver. There were four passengers in the Lexus that crashed.
The athlete’s bodyguard was in another vehicle behind them before the accident,” Adeniyi Orojo, an eyewitness to the accident, told Nigerian journalists. The police have already started investigating the accident.
Preliminary findings indicate that the Lexus Jeep may have exceeded the legal speed limit. The FRSC added that the car lost control during an overtaking maneuver and crashed into a stationary truck at the side of the road.
According to the latest information, the victims of the accident were Latif “Latz” Ayodele and Sina Ghami, trainers and close friends of Joshua.
Joshua has family roots in the town of Sagamu in Ogun State, South West Nigeria, where he was at the time of the accident.
Photos are circulating online showing the British boxer with Nigerian roots shirtless and surrounded by shards of broken glass on the seats around him.
“We’re trying to contact Anthony and we don’t want to speculate on his condition until then, but luckily from what I’ve seen in the photos he looks fine,” Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn told Daily Mail Sport.
Anthony Joshua is one of the most famous world boxers of the last decade and a former holder of the WBA, IBF and WBO titles.
“I can confirm that an accident has occurred and the victim has been taken to hospital,” said the local police commissioner, Lanre Ogunlowo. Police are also heading to the hospital to confirm the number of casualties and the condition of the injured.
Anthony Joshua knocked out the American YouTuber and boxer Jake Paul in a controversial fight supported by the streaming service Netflix, only 5 days before Christmas in Miami, USA.
The participants shared a huge prize of 184 million dollars, which is approximately 157 million euros.
Next year, the former Olympic champion should meet in the ring with his compatriot and another former world champion, Tyson Fury.
Joshua’s last fight before his duel with Paul was a fifth-round knockout loss to another Briton, Daniel Dubois, in September last year.
