Anderson Defeats van Gerwen: Darts Upset

The two-time title holder Gary Anderson has thrown Michael van Gerwen out of the tournament at the World Darts Championship in London. “The Flying Scotsman”, as the 55-year-old is called, clearly won 4-1 against the three-time world champions from the Netherlands in a top-class round of 16. In 2017, the two darts greats faced each other in the World Cup final, and van Gerwen won.

After his World Cup titles in 2014, 2017 and 2019, the Dutchman still has to wait for his fourth triumph at Alexandra Palace. In his title years, van Gerwen completely dominated the darts scene. After the clear defeat against Anderson, he is now even in danger of falling out of the top four in the world rankings.

Rock out surprisingly

Before the duel between the former world champions, European champion Gian van Veen had confidently secured his ticket to the quarter-finals. Van Veen defeated surprise player Charlie Manby 4-1 and is still in the tournament in the new year. Team world champion Josh Rock from Northern Ireland was defeated by England’s Justin Hood 4-0. Hood meets Anderson.

The four quarter-finals will take place on New Year’s Day (1:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m./Sport1 and DAZN). The favorite for the title is world number one Luke Littler, who has only lost two sets in four games so far. Littler won his first title at the last World Cup and is aiming for a second triumph at the age of 18.
