Huesca
Alto Aragonese clubs and athletes welcome the new year with many hopes that must be turned into reality. We have been in competition for half a season and SD Huesca and Bada Huesca are fighting to stay and improve their situation. In the case of CB Peñas, the objective is somewhat more ambitious and the focus is on fighting for the playoff.
There are many clubs that receive the new year full of challenges such as Intec Zoiti, Club Hielo Jaca, Club Patín Esneca Fraga or Bádminton Huesca, to refer to those who play in the most prominent categories of their sports. We can add in football UD Barbastro, which hopes to remain in the Second RFEF for another year, as well as SD Huesca Femenino.
The events will once again play an important role, led by the Quebrantahuesos Cycle Tour March or the Aneto Trail due to the number of participants and international impact. But we must not forget others such as La Magia del Grail, La BTT HU-108, La Orbea Monegros, Canfranc Canfranc and many other events that turn Alto Aragón into a great sporting venue every year.
Athletes arrive at 2026 with their backpacks also loaded with hopes. Without a doubt, the main reference is the gymnast Inés Bergua or the athlete Pol Oriach. Both say goodbye to a 2025 full of successes, which has led them to be chosen as the best Alto Aragonese athletes of this year.
And within the many sporting disciplines, the professional cyclists, Arcas, Pablo Castrillo, Barceló and Samitier who face another season in the international peloton.
The list of athletes and especially of promises in all sports is very extensive and this 2026 can be important for all of them, as well as the efforts of the clubs with their directors and coaches at the forefront so that sport and Alto Aragón shine in all its competitions.
In addition to the usual calendar of events each year and increasingly consolidated, the institutions are making an effort to bring top-level events to the province of Huesca that will surely also arrive in 2026, which comes full of hope for Alto Aragonese sport.
Summary of the 2025 sports year
The historic sale of El Alcoraz and the good season of SD Huesca, the miraculous permanence of Bada Huesca, CB Peñas that was on the verge of promotion, the successes of other clubs such as Intec Zoiti, Esneca Fraga, Basket Barbastro, Bádminton Huesca and the good level of the athletes, led right now by a reference such as the gymnast Inés Bergua, and the consolidation of events with the Bearded Vultures at the helm have once again been protagonists in this 2025 that we say goodbye. It has been an intense year, with joys and sadness, but above all, a lot of effort.
Clubs
SD Huesca has shone in sports, with Antonio Hidalgo they dreamed of playing in the promotion playoff, but different circumstances left them on the road. Then came the departure of the Catalan coach and important players such as Miguel Loureiro and Gerard Valentín. New stage with Sergi Guilló on the bench, a bet that did not go well and Jon Pérez Bolo arrived with whom we have seen a reaction that still has a long way to go. For now, out of the relegation places, with a two-point advantage, the objective is permanence.
Institutionally, the economic situation is on the right track and the new managers, Grupos Costa and Arqa, have managed to provide stability that we hope will serve to recover important sporting achievements for the entity. The sale of the El Alcoraz Stadium to the Government of Aragon for 24 million euros has been, without a doubt, something that will go down in the history of the Barça club in 2025.
Bada Huesca suffered until the last second of the last game to stay in the Asobal. The injuries and the many problems that the team had last season were saved with important reinforcements such as Drasko Nenadic and Javier Borragán who, together with the rest, made a true miracle. This year we have to suffer again, after what we saw in the first round. Players with a lot of history came out like Miguel Malo or Dani Arguillas.
It will also be difficult for CB Peñas to forget this year. Promotion to Primera FEB came close after a great season. The league begins with good results and there is the team, third in the standings, but the departure of Rafa Sanz, after two and a half years directing the team and which has led to the return of Santi Cerdán to the bench, and the eviction of the Peñas Center and the financial limitations of the entity makes it a bittersweet year for Fernando Lascorz’s team.
Esneca Fraga continues to shine in women’s roller hockey. Competing since 2021, successes continue to accompany them and after being Champions League champions they competed in the Intercontinental Cup in Argentina and this season they are in the top group in the OK Iberdrola League and have won the Super Cup.
For its part, CH Jaca was left at the gates of the league and the Copa del Rey, both titles escaped with Puigcerdá in the finals, while the women’s team continues to compete at a good level, without forgetting the skating or curling sections.
In provincial football, Barbastro achieved permanence in the Second RFEF in a last match against Escobedo full of emotion and SD Huesca Femenino as well, a goal they are pursuing again this year.
The one that was on the verge of promotion in football to the Second RFEF was Atlético de Monzón in a penalty shootout that left the Montisonenses without a prize against the Balearic Porreres. Within provincial football, SD Huesca also remains in the Honor Division, a goal it is pursuing for the new campaign.
Intec Zoiti also with its permanence in the Honor Division and the women’s team in the First Division, which has been another of the successes of Alto Aragonese sport in a sport like athletics where both Hinaco Monzón and the rest of the clubs in the province continue to work especially with the base.
The promotion of Unión Basket Barbastro to Third RFEF or Badminton Huesca to the Honor Division, a decade after having been in the highest category, are other notable results, without forgetting rhythmic gymnastics and Club 90, which year after year participates with its athletes in the highest level national events.
Peña Guara has completed a year with an extensive sports program, organizing important competitions and with work that goes far beyond sports because of what it means within Huesca society as an entity. The work of clubs such as Montañeros de Aragón de Barbastro, Mayencos de Jaca or CA Sobrarbe, among others, also stands out.
There are many clubs in Alto Aragón that do not stop in their work to promote the sport and among them we can also highlight the Club Ciclista Oscense that is carrying out an intense calendar of events and that has the San Lorenzo Cycling Grand Prix as its highlight and now La Magia del Grail a test that is already shining in its first editions.
Judo in the province, especially in Binéfar and Huesca, continues to constantly grow with good results in national competitions. In the capital, other clubs such as Tenis Osca or Tenis Zoiti continue to compete without leaving their training work. Paddle tennis also continues to make a place for itself within clubs and sports centers. Basketball Jaca, Barbastro, CBF Huesca, Boscos de Huesca or CB Monzón, Club de Tiro Loreto, Club Patín Huesca, Zoiti ’89 swimming and Volleyball Huesca, which are emerging strongly, also continue with their activities.
Sportsmen
The gymnast Inés Bergua is a reference for Alto Aragonese sport with successes with the Spanish rhythmic gymnastics team of which she is the captain and right now the flagship of our athletes. Pol Oriach has come to compete in the outdoor track World Cup in the 1,500m event in Japan, taking an important step in his career. Marina Mata in basketball was the European Under-20 champion with Spain and has made her debut in the F League with the Cadí La Seu team.
Cycling keeps the four musketeers on the professional circuit with Jorge Arcas and Pablo Castrillo in Movistar, Fernando Barceló in Caja Rural and Sergio Samitier in Cofidis. The four started in La Vuelta, but only the last one was able to finish due to the mishaps they suffered.
Chistian Iguácel continues to be on the international front line in athletics in relays with the Belgian team and Intec Zoiti. Elena Guiu and Eva Rico competed in the European Under-23 athletics competition, Marcos Lorenzo in the Pum Track World Cup and Alejandro Gállego, Gonzalo Isábal and Raúl Bergua in badminton have also passed the name of Huesca through national and international competitions with outstanding results. Another athlete from Huesca, Dani Calvo, returned to the First Division of football with Real Oviedo, being the captain of the Asturians.
Long list in which we can include other names such as Dani Osanz or Carrodilla Cabestre in mountain races, Cristina Espejo, Jorge Torre, Javi Cruz, Mario Revenga, Sandra Labarta or Alberto Puyuelo who have also shone in their athletics competitions. The list of promises is very extensive and they will surely soon be names of the Alto Aragonese sport.
Events
And we come to the events where the Quebrantahuesos Cycle Tourist March continues to be the economic and sporting engine of cycle tourism in Sabiñánigo and throughout the province. Year after year it is surpassed and maintains a level of expectation among the participants that makes it a unique event in Alto Aragón.
But this year, very important events have also been held, such as the Mountain & Trail Running World Championship in Canfranc, which was a complete success. The presence of La Vuelta a España through Alto Aragonese lands once again with return to Cerler and departure from Monzón the next day in two stages in the province.
Other notable events have been the final of the Queen’s Cup football between FC Barcelona, with the best players in the world, and At. Madrid in Huesca with the El Alcoraz Stadium full. The Women’s Basketball Super Cup with the title that Casademont Zaragoza won in Huesca, also with a great atmosphere in the stands of the Palacio de los Deportes and the absolute men’s handball match between Spain and Latvia have been other important events that have taken place in Huesca.
Without forgetting those that accompany us every year, in addition to the Quebrantahuesos and the Treparriscos. The Orbea Monegros BTT is another of the great two-wheeled events in the province. The HU108 BTT continues to consolidate in Huesca and continues to grow in the capital and now the Magic of the Grail has joined.
Mountain races continue to boom and the Trail Aneto Posets in Benasque continues to bring together thousands of athletes in the month of July, with a calendar that includes the Great Mountain Marathon, also in Ribagorza, the Perimetrail of Arguis, the Trail Sierra de Guara, Valle de Tena, etc.
The Benasque Chess Trophy or the Cinca Descent were two other notable events that will attract participants and lovers of these sports to the Pyrenees and Fraga.
And we could continue with many other events that are held every year, such as the 36 hours of Indoor Soccer in Sabiñánigo and the Conchita Martínez Women’s Tennis Tournament in Monzón. Each population in the province continues to enjoy its sports events that also allow it to be a source of economic income and promotion.
Sports have experienced a tough year, with joys and sadness, but with projects and many managers working without whom it would be impossible to live in a province with so much activity and full of sports venues. We hope that in 2026 we can experience new successes for Alto Aragonese clubs and athletes.
