The time for exhibitions, in the world of the little yellow ball, never stops. The month of December, the only official break, is therefore ideal.
Like the Beatles in their time, Carlos Alcaraz is on American tour. After facing Frances Tiafoe in New Jersey on Sunday (6-3, 3-6, 10-7 defeat), he continued Monday evening in a baseball stadium in Miami against Joao Fonseca. It’s anecdotal, but the Spaniard also won this first duel, certainly in an exhibition, against the little 19-year-old Brazilian prodigy (7-5, 2-6, 10-8) who is one of the few in the world’s top 30 to be even younger than his illustrious opponent (aged 22).
“It’s exciting, I really like it”
Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets, freshly crowned MLS champions with Inter Miami, were at home and jumped at the opportunity to come and watch this nice outing by their compatriot. Which delighted the latter, himself very attentive to the news of his comrades since he had been able to attend the conference final the previous week (5-1 against New York City), also presenting the trophy of the said Eastern Conference to Lionel Messi: “It was a pleasure for me to see them play the penultimate match of their career, a wonderful experience, and I am very happy for them that they won the MLS. At the end, David Beckham, Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets… I was so happy for them. They deserve it and now knowing that they are there for my match is a source of inspiration.
After the two boys, it was the two locals Jessica Pegula and Amanda Anisimova who concluded this event in Miami (named Miami Invitational). Carlos Alcaraz simply hopes “that people like it, it’s not usual to see us playing in this kind of stadiums and courts”: “It’s exciting to receive the energy of the people in this type of place, I like it a lot.” For Jessica Pegula, without ever talking about the amount received of course, it’s the same type of celebration: “It’s always really nice and refreshing to do something other than what we do 95% of the time. It’s great, it’s different for the fans and everyone, it also reminds us why we play.”
