It is without a doubt the news of this end of the year. Juan Carlos Ferrero stops being Carlos Alcaraz’s coach. Without much further explanation, the Murcian confirmed this Wednesday that Ferrero, the man who has accompanied him since he was a child and with whom he has won 24 titles, including six Grand Slams, and climbed to the top of the ranking, is no longer his coach.
It is very difficult for me to write this. After more than seven years together, ‘Juanki’ and I have decided to end our time together as coach and player. Thank you for making childhood dreams come true. We started this path when I was just a kid, and throughout this time you have accompanied me on an incredible journey, on and off the track. And I have really enjoyed every step with you. We have managed to reach the top, and I feel that, if our sporting paths had to separate, it should be from up there. From the place we always work for and always aspire to reach,” Alcaraz said through his social networks.
Thus ends a path that began in 2018 when Ferrero, who was already one of the most sought-after coaches in the world and who had worked with Alexander Zverev, rejected offers from professional tennis players to be in charge of the progression of a young promise from El Palmar.

With a barely fifteen-year-old Alcaraz under his tutelage, Ferrero guided him from junior tournaments to the absolute top of this sport. Together they have achieved practically everything. From the first US Open in 2022, to five more Grand Slams, including another in New York, two Wimbledons and two Roland Garros, fifty weeks at number one in the world, also being the youngest in history to achieve it, and a total of 24 titles.
Alcaraz has gone from being a bet of Ferrero, who saw talent in him when he was just a teenager, to being the best tennis player on the planet and, now, for no apparent reason, they separate their paths.
«There are so many memories that come to mind that keeping just one would not be fair. You have made me grow as an athlete, but above all as a person. And something I value very much: I have enjoyed the process. I stay with that, with the path traveled together. Now come times of change for both of us, new adventures and new projects. But I am certain that we will face them in the right way, giving our best, as we have always done. Always adding. I wish you the best from the bottom of my heart in everything that comes. I am left with the peace of mind of knowing that we have not left anything to give, that we have put everything at each other’s disposal,” added the Murcian.
More enigmatic has been Ferrero’s farewell: “I would have liked to continue,” ‘Mosquito’ wrote on his social networks. «Today is a difficult day, one in which it is difficult to find the words. Saying goodbye is never easy, and even less so when there are so many shared experiences behind it. We have worked hard, grown together and shared unforgettable experiences. Today closes a very important stage of my life. I close it with nostalgia, but also with pride and excitement for what is yet to come. I know that everything I have experienced has prepared me to be better. Thank you, Carlos, for the trust. I wish you all the best, both professionally and personally.
With the departure of Ferrero, just before the start of Alcaraz’s preseason, who returned these days from his vacation in the United States, Samuel López will help the Murcian. Pablo Carreño’s coach for many years joined the Alcaraz team permanently last year. Samu López had already worked with Alcaraz in the past, occasionally, in tournaments that Ferrero could not attend due to family obligations.
