Donny van de Beek does not yet know whether he will ever return to Ajax. Although the 28-year-old Girona midfielder is linked to his childhood sweetheart almost every transfer window, he currently has a different goal.
The nineteen-time international of the Dutch national team is recovering from a ruptured Achilles tendon. In conversation with Ajax Life Van de Beek indicates that a return to Amsterdam is not an option.
Van de Beek does not even dare to say that he aspires to do so later in life. “It should not be a forced end to my career. Ajax is in my heart. I grew up with the club, but if there is anything I have learned since then, it is that you cannot plan in football.”
In any case, Van de Beek has not received a call recently. “No, there has been no contact. Not even last summer. I am not looking ahead and want to recover from this injury first. Do everything I can to show people the real Donny van de Beek again.”
In any case, Van de Beek will continue to follow his club. “Ajax is in a difficult period. That should be clear. That has often been the case, but the club always came out of it. I don’t have the solution, but in general terms, Ajax’s greatest strength for me remains its own youth. That is what the club should rely on.”
So far, Van de Beek has played 175 official matches on behalf of Ajax. He scored 41 goals and 34 assists.
In 2020, Van de Beek was sold to Manchester United for no less than 39 million euros. According to Transfer market he is only worth 2 million euros.
