Åge Hareide.

Football coach Åge Hareide is dead.

He lived to be 72 years old.

Hareide was diagnosed with brain cancer this summer.

“Dad fell asleep last night, at home with his family around him. Now he has played his last game. We are eternally grateful for all the love we received during the time he was ill”writes son Bendik to VG.

Hareide was an iconic football coach who, among other things, led the national teams of Norway, Denmark and Iceland.

He also coached the Swedish club teams Örgryte, Helsingborgs IF and Malmö FF. He won SC gold with both HIF and MFF and took MFF to the Champions League group stage twice.

Markus Rosenberg was MFF’s big star during Hareide’s time at the club.

“A coach, a role model, a big heart. Thank you for everything Åge”writes Rosenberg on Instagram after the death notice.

Magnus Eriksson was also a key player in Hareide’s MFF.

“A great person, fantastic leader and coach with a big heart. Retrained me to become a midfielder, which was a big decision in my career. He has meant a lot to me and to a lot of people. A sad day. All thoughts to his family”writes Eriksson to Sportbladet.

Emil Forsberg also had Hareide as a coach in MFF.

– A great person, a great man who helped me a lot in my career, Forsberg recently told Sportbladet.

“Terribly sad”

Hareide is mourned in many places in the football world.

– It is terribly sad that Åge has passed away. Our warmest thoughts go out to his immediate family, says Norway’s national team captain Ståle Solbakken VG.

Sweden’s former national team captain Jon Dahl Tomasson worked with Hareide in Denmark’s national team. They were good friends.

“It is an incredibly sad day. I feel deeply and deeply with the family. They have lost a great person – we all have”Tomasson signs Instagram.

Hareide also had a solid career as a player and belonged to Manchester City and Norwich, among others. He played 50 international matches for Norway.
