Led by goalscorer Victor Osimhen, co-favorites Nigeria reached the round of 16 of the Africa Cup early. The “Super Eagles” beat Tunisia 3-2 (1-0) on Saturday evening and celebrated their second win in their second game. With six points, the three-time title holder can plan for the knockout round.
Osimhen (44th) from Galatasaray Istanbul, Wilfred Ndidi (50th) and Ademola Lookman (67th) scored the victory for Nigeria in Fes, Morocco. Montassar Talbi (74′) and Ali Abdi (87’/hand penalty) made things exciting again for Tunisia. The outsiders Uganda and Tanzania had previously drawn 1-1 (0-0) in Group C. Both teams still have a chance of progressing with one point each, Tunisia has three points.
Meanwhile, Senegal’s national football team still has to wait to reach the round of 16. Despite a clear superiority, the World Cup participant was unable to score more than 1-1 (0-0) against the DR Congo in the port city of Tangier – but with four points to their name, they are almost certain of progressing.
Long-time Liverpool star and ex-Munich player Sadio Mané (69th) saved the Senegalese a point. Cedric Bakambu (61st) gave the DR Congo the lead. The Congolese also have four points on their account. In the early afternoon, the selection from Benin preserved their chances of progressing with a 1-0 (1-0) win against Botswana. Benin is third in Group D with three points.
Senegal, for whom Cologne-born Ismail Jakobs was in the starting line-up, dominated from the start. Bayern professional Nicolas Jackson, who had shone with a brace in the opener against Botswana (3-0), missed his great chance to take the lead after Mané’s assist (23′). The DR Congo was defensively compact and subsequently got into the game better. Bakambu scored with a shot, but Mané responded.
