2026 World Cup: National Team Faces FIFA Ban & Withdrawal

The Surinamese team has to face Bolivia and the winner of that series will face Iraq to determine the last member of group I.

But the Bolivian press has echoed a possible sanction that would give them a direct place in the final of the playoff.

According to this version, Suriname is at risk of being sanctioned by Fifa following a leadership conflict between candidates for the presidency of the federation who lost the internal elections.

The Suriname justice system froze the accounts of its team after the Oldenstam and Kurban groups filed a complaint with the authorities for alleged irregularities in the vote.

“This action is in bad faith and benefits no one. The objective appears to be to hinder the functioning of the SVB,” the Suriname federation published in a statement.

There would be serious consequences

In said statement, Suriname warns that the intervention of the ordinary justice system could have serious consequences for its selection.

“This exposes the SVB to serious sanctions, including suspension or even the creation of a normalization committee. “This would mean the temporary suspension of all national and international football activities,” the federation noted.

This match will be held in Monterrey, headquarters of the 2026 World Cup, being one of the first matches that will test the organization of the host countries.

Suriname does not have a coach

Although Suriname’s territory is in South America, it has historically played in the qualifiers in Concacaf and this is the first time it has a real chance of qualifying for the World Cup.

Much of this was achieved thanks to the hand of coach Stanley Menzo, who decided to resign on November 30.

As a result of the leadership and economic crises, Suriname has not been able to find a replacement at the level of the instances they will compete for next year.

“After a thorough evaluation of the recent international break and careful consultation with our general manager, Brian Tevreden, I have decided this week to resign as coach of the Suriname national team,” Menzo said in a public statement.

The DT did not explain the reasons for the unexpected decision. “I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved together, and it has been a great honor to be part of this extraordinary journey. However, I believe it is the right decision to step aside at this time,” he added.

“I sincerely wish the players, staff and management a lot of luck, strength and success in this last decisive step in March. “This comes from the depths of my heart,” he concluded.
