(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Seol Ha-eun = The 2025 Dubai Asian Youth Para Games (Asian Youth Para Games), a sports festival for Asian disabled youth, has begun.

The opening ceremony of the Asian Youth Para Games was held at the Dubai Disabled Sports Club in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at 7:30 pm on the 10th local time.

This tournament, which will be held for four days from the 10th to the 13th, will be the largest ever with over 1,500 athletes from 35 Asian countries participating.

Among the 11 sports, Korea dispatched 88 people (46 athletes, 42 executives) to 9 sports.

The opening ceremony was held in the following order: entrance of the athletes, introduction of the outline of the competition using an artificial intelligence (AI) robot, opening declaration by Asian Paralympic Committee Chairman Majid Rashid, oaths of athletes and judges, and congratulatory performance.

The Korean team’s flag bearer was Ha-yeon Kwon, who competes in the women’s recurve archery event.

Ha-yeon Kwon said, “I feel a great sense of responsibility as the flag bearer for this competition,” and added, “I hope I can achieve good results by demonstrating the skills I have honed so far in the competition.”

The Korean team, which participated in the five sports of goalball, boccia, badminton, swimming, and table tennis held prior to the opening ceremony, won one gold medal and one silver medal.

In the men’s 200m freestyle swimming, Kim Jae-hoon (sport class S14) tore through the golden water in the youth division (12-16 years old), and Son Ji-won won a silver medal in the junior division (17-18 years old).

In men’s goalball, they won a cold game 12-2 over Thailand, and also defeated the Philippines 10-4, earning their second win in the preliminary round robin.

In women’s goalball, they won 10-9 against Kazakhstan, but lost 1-5 to Thailand, recording 1 win and 1 loss.

Badminton Noh Young-hoon (Sports Class WH2), Kim Ji-seong (Sports Class SL4), and Jang Doo-hyun (Sports Class SL3) scored a victory in the first match of the individual preliminary round, and the Hong Ji-woo and Jang Doo-hyeon team also added a victory.

On the 11th, the second day of the competition, competitions in 8 sports (goalball, boccia, badminton, swimming, archery, weightlifting, track and field, and table tennis) will be held.
