RIYADH (Reuters) – The first round of the WTA Finals, the final tournament of the women’s tennis tour season, was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on the 2nd, with world No. 1 Arina Sabalenka from Belarus and No. 5 Jessica Pegula of the United States each winning in singles.
Sabalenka, who has won four Grand Slam tournaments, faced fellow eighth-placed Jasmine Paolini (Italy) and hit a total of 11 aces for an easy 6-3, 6-1 victory.
“The score doesn’t matter. I always know I have to concentrate. If you give (Paolini) a chance, she controls the match,” said Sabalenka, who won 60 times on tour this season and 500 in her career. “I was focused, I was calm, I felt like I had everything under control.”
Pegula won her match against American Cori Gauff, who is ranked third in the world and has won two Grand Slam tournaments, 6-3, 6-7, 6-2. “Coco (Gauff) is a great champion, a great competitor, and a good friend, so it’s always tough to play against her. Today I did the best I could,” she said after the match.
