In a stunning turn of events following Nigeria’s elimination from the World Cup playoffs, national team coach Eric Chelle pointed fingers at what he described as “voodoo” practices by the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) players during the penalty shootout. The accusation came in the heated moments after the African playoff final in Rabat, Morocco, where Chelle was reportedly incensed and sought out the DRC representatives.

During a post-match press conference, Chelle expressed frustration, suggesting that journalists had overlooked the “obvious topic” during their earlier conversation wiht Congo’s coach, sebastien Desabre. He was unable to provide specific details on how his players were allegedly affected by these supposed supernatural tactics.
Nonetheless of the coach’s claims, the outcome stands: the highly anticipated “Super Eagles” will miss their second consecutive World Cup. Nigeria fell 3-4 to DR Congo in a dramatic penalty shootout. Though, the match’s chaotic nature might be attributed to more earthly factors than witchcraft. Heavy rain poured down just as the decisive kicks were being taken, and plastic bottles were repeatedly thrown from the Nigerian fan section towards the penalty spot, potentially disrupting the shooters.
DR Congo has not yet secured their World Cup spot; they will advance to intercontinental playoffs scheduled for March. From the African continent, the following nations have directly qualified for the World Cup: Egypt, Algeria, Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast), Ghana, Cape Verde, Morocco, Senegal, South Africa, and Tunisia.
