German U17 Badminton Squad Eyes European Quarter-Finals on Lanzarote
Arrecife, Lanzarote – The air on the volcanic island of lanzarote is buzzing with anticipation as the 2025 U17 European Team Championship kicks off this week, and the German contingent is ready too make some noise. From November 29th to December 3rd, 34 nations will descend upon the extraordinary sports hall in Arrecife, all vying for continental supremacy. For the young German squad, the mission is clear: navigate a challenging group stage and secure a coveted spot in the quarter-finals.
The German team,a formidable unit of six men and six women, has already touched down and is deep in readiness. Under the watchful eyes of federal base trainers Dirk Nötzel and Oliver Pongratz, with support from Kai Schäfer and physiotherapist Ute Brandt, the squad is fine-tuning their skills for the intense competition ahead.
Germany finds itself in a competitive group, set to face off against Norway, Iceland, and Ukraine. The tournament format sees eight preliminary round groups, with only the group winners advancing to the knockout stage. The German campaign officially begins on Saturday around 3 p.m. with a showdown against Norway. The disciplines on display will be the classic badminton lineup: men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, and the dynamic mixed doubles.
National coach Dirk Nötzel expressed confidence in his team’s readiness, highlighting the excellent facilities and the squad’s current form. We found a large, very modern hall with excellent conditions and have already completed two good training sessions. The team is fit, motivated and feels good.
Nötzel elaborated on their initial group opponents, stating, We are going into the tournament as the clear favorites against Norway and wont to show that. Iceland is currently rated as somewhat weaker – we have very good chances there too.
However, Nötzel acknowledged the significant challenge that awaits in their final group match. Winning the group will problably be decided against Ukraine, who, as a seeded team, are listed as favorites from a tournament perspective.
He added a note of caution, drawing on past encounters: Ukraine is traditionally a team that does a lot with little and has often beaten us in previous years. But we have a strong, balanced team and definitely want to reach the quarter-finals. to do that, we have to win against Ukraine – and we are ready for that.
This sentiment echoes the drive seen in many young American sports teams aiming to punch above their weight on the international stage. The pressure to perform in a decisive match against a historically strong opponent is a familiar narrative, and the German team’s focus on preparation and belief in their balanced roster is a promising sign.

The ultimate goal for the German team is to advance beyond the group stage and into the top eight nations in Europe. While the draw for the quarter-finals will introduce new dynamics, the immediate focus remains on securing their passage.
