Terme Salus Viterbo Loses to Selargius | Basketball Update

VITERBO – Terme Salus were defeated in the away game at Selargius, paying dearly for a very negative last quarter (partial score 22-6 for the Sardinians), with a finish that absolutely does not reflect the progress of the match.

Coach Scaramuccia decides to start the match with a very high quintet, simultaneously fielding Myklebust, Cutrupi and Imuentinyan, together with Arianna Puggioni and Gionchilie, with the idea of asserting centimeters and physical strength near the basket and countering the home pair of long players formed by Erikstrup and Juhasz.

In attack, the objective was achieved because the Viterbo team found the way to the basket with relative ease and captured many rebounds, in particular with Cutrupi who asserted himself even with heavy points. The defense, however, struggled to contain a wild Erikstrup who scored 8 personal points in the 10-7 with which the Sardinians reached the halfway point of the first set. Viterbo responds with a 6-0 minibreak signed by 4 consecutive points from Arianna Puggioni and Imuentinyan and there is also an attempt to extend the lead with Myklebust’s second triple of the evening which is worth 12-16. Selargius responds with Juhasz and D’Angelo and so the situation returns to perfect parity (16-16) at the first siren.

The second period, as sometimes happens, enjoys reversing everything that was seen in the first: the attacks are in difficulty, Viterbo’s even remains dry for over five minutes but the hosts also do little better, reaching only +5 (21-16) with two free throws from D’Angelo. Coach Scaramuccia finds himself with Arianna Puggioni and Gionchilie burdened with three fouls in a few seconds but it is Puggioni herself, left on the parquet, who leads the charge for Terme Salus with the triple that finally moves the scoreboard for the Viterbo team. Erikstrup confirmed his grace in the evening by hitting two triples which brought Selargius back to +5 (29-24) and which already brought him to 16 points but Viterbo got closer at the end of the half with Cutrupi and went to the break with only three points to recover (31-28).

The third period opens again in the light of Erikstrup who continues his game of life by scoring two more triples and promoting a new attempt to gain an advantage for Nuova Icom (39-31). However, Terme Salus responded with a 9-1 run by Myklebust, Bardarè and Cutrupi and at half-time the score was back to -1. The Viterbo team never managed to regain the lead but always remained in contact, relying on the rebounds of a very solid Cutrupi (19 in total for her in the end) and the first points from Gionchilie, who up until then had been held back by foul problems.

Everything points to a final period characterized by balance but the Terme Salus attack stumbles again and remains dry for almost 4 minutes; when Gionchilie scores the first basket, Selargius is +10 (53-43) with yet another good initiative from Erikstrup but the Viterbo quintet doesn’t give up and tries to stay in the wake also thanks to Bardarè. The match was decided in one minute, with triples in sequence by Erikstrup and Mura (twice) as well as an unsportsmanlike whistle on Myklebust and a technical foul on the bench by coach Scaramuccia. Selargius extends and brings home the success while Terme Salus will have to try to regain the two points on Sunday at home against San Giovanni Valdarno.
