The basketball world is mourning the loss of a true legend. Michael Ray richardson, affectionately known as “Sugar” for his dazzling play on the court, has passed away at the age of 70 after a battle with cancer.Richardson, a dynamic force in the NBA during the late 1970s and early 1980s, left an indelible mark on the game with his electrifying performances.
Drafted fourth overall by the New York Knicks in 1978, Richardson quickly became a fan favorite. His number 20 jersey was synonymous with magic and breathtaking plays.Whether at Madison Square Garden or in any of the league’s arenas, “Sugar” was a delight to watch. hailing from Lubbock, Texas, Richardson possessed a rare blend of skills: scorching jump shots, gravity-defying rebounds, imaginative assists, and an uncanny ability to blow by defenders or drain shots from beyond the arc with lightning speed. He was an icon of global basketball, and his passing leaves a void felt by legions of fans on both sides of the Atlantic, including in Italy.
Richardson’s NBA career saw him play for the Knicks until 1982, followed by brief stints with the Golden State Warriors and the New Jersey Nets, where he played from 1983 to 1986. Regrettably, his career in the league was cut short. After testing positive for cocaine for the third time in 1984, he was suspended, and ultimately banned from the NBA in 1986.
However, the closure of his NBA chapter opened a new, vibrant one in Europe. In 1988, Richardson arrived in Italy, joining Virtus Bologna. he quickly became an absolute icon for the club, leading them with his feline leaps, tenacious rebounding, and lightning-fast plays to victory in two Italian Cups and a Cup Winners’ Cup – the first international trophy in the team’s history. He bid farewell to Bologna in 1991, never winning a league title but famously scoring 50 points in an all-Star Game. His class and power on the court captivated fans in Bologna and beyond.
The city of Bologna, through its mayor Matteo Lepore, expressed its grief: Bologna is mourning one of the brightest stars of Basket City. Those who love basketball in Bologna will always remember the images of this exceptional player treading ‘our’ parquets between the end of the ’80s and the beginning of the ’90s, bringing the first European cup to virtus.
In Italy, the American champion, who was the NBA’s leading passer in 1980,led the league in steals in 1980,1983,and 1985,was a 4-time All-Star,and holds the distinction of being the second-best player ever for steals per NBA game, also played for livorno and Forlì,where he continued to play until the age of 43.
Across the Old Continent, Richardson, who retired from playing at 45, also donned the jerseys of Antibes in France, winning a national championship, and Split in Croatia, where he secured a Croatian Cup. His son, Amir, currently plays football for Fiorentina and represents the Moroccan national team.
