Florence Baseball’s 70th Anniversary: A Look back at the Lions and a Dream for the Future

Florence, Italy – The diamond in Florence is celebrating a significant milestone. On November 5th, the city marked the 70th anniversary of its baseball roots, honoring the legacy of the Lions Baseball Club of Florence. The occasion also saw the unveiling of a new book, Lions Forever – The remarkable story of the Lions Baseball Club Florence, a comprehensive chronicle of the club’s journey through the decades.

The event brought together a constellation of baseball figures,including former stars who etched their names in the club’s history. Among them was Roberta Biancalani, a florentine native who played for the Smash team from 1971 to 1975. Her story is a powerful reminder of the enduring passion that fuels grassroots sports, even as life takes us in new directions.

Biancalani, who moved from Florence to the mountainous region of Maresca in 1987, still holds her love for the game close. I left Florence to land in the “Terre Alte”, without forgetting the bat and glove, which have always been close to me, she shared. Her vision for the future is as inspiring as it is aspiring: My secret dream? To see a lovely baseball field built in the mountains with many boys and girls playing and having fun with this splendid sport. She also expressed a heartfelt desire to reconnect with her former teammates and rivals after nearly fifty years, highlighting the deep bonds forged through competition.

The celebration was graced by prominent figures in the world of baseball and softball, underscoring the importance of this anniversary. Riccardo Frattari, president of the World baseball and Softball Federation, and Marco Mazzieri, president of the Italian Baseball and Softball federation, were in attendance, accompanied by vice-president Marina Centrone. Simone Cardullo, president of Coni Toscano, also joined the festivities.

The book, Lions Forever, delves into the rich tapestry of the Lions Baseball Club, recounting the stories of its players and the evolution of baseball in Florence. A significant portion of the narrative focuses on the Campo di Marte, the primary venue for the sport in the city from 1955 to 1980, a place that holds countless memories for generations of players and fans.
