The Zubieta racecourse hosts this Sunday the 69th edition of the San Sebastián International Cross, an event that little by little has been losing its popularity. … prominence and the level it once had. Around 1,200 athletes, half school and half federated, compete today from 9:45 a.m. in a day that will close at 12:30 and 1:10 p.m. with the dispute of the absolute women’s and men’s races, respectively. The San Sebastián Cross is a qualifying event for the Spanish Championship.
As happened last year with the victory of the Uruguayan Santiago Catrofe, surprises could easily be seen today given that there are no African first swords among those registered. The American distance runner himself will be one of the names to follow today in a men’s race in which the Ugandan Martin Kiprotich and the Kenyan Naibei Kiplimo are surely also in the fight to climb to the top of the podium. In terms of Spanish representation, Aaron Las Heras and Yahia Aouina, Spanish champion by surprise at the beginning of the year, stand out. The Gipuzkoans Martín Segurola and Manex Cívico are also signed up.
In the absolute women’s race, 6,900 meters (same distance as the men’s), the main athlete to follow will be the Kenyan Celestine Jepkosgei. Among Spanish athletes, Marta Serrano, Spanish 3,000 meter steeplechase champion, is the main name.
Tickets are priced at six euros for those over twelve years of age and can be purchased at the box office only with cash.
Today is the second Basque cross country event, after Zornotza two weeks ago, whose season is increasingly shortened.
