(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Dong-chan = Arina Sabalenka (Belarus) ranked first in the world at the end of the year in the Women’s Professional Tennis (WTA) Tour singles for two consecutive years.

The WTA Tour held an award ceremony for Sabalenka’s year-end world number one ranking on the first day of the season finale, the WTA Finals (total prize money of $15.5 million), which opened in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on the 1st (local time).

Since the tennis world ranking is determined based on the most recent year’s performance, the No. 1 player in the world rankings at the end of the year means the player who achieved the best results that year.

Since the world rankings were computerized in 1975, only 16 players have ranked first in the year-end world rankings.

Sabalenka ranked No. 1 in the world at the end of the year for the first time last year, and this year she became No. 1 in the world at the end of the year for the second consecutive year.

Sabalenka, who won four singles titles at this year’s WTA Tour or higher level tournaments, including the US Open, has been ranked No. 1 in the singles world since October of last year.

In 2022 and 2023, Iga Sibiontech (2nd place, Poland) ranked first in the world in singles at the end of the year.
