The global figure skating community is buzzing with anticipation as Prague has officially been named the host city for the 2026 World Figure Skating Championships. This prestigious event, set to take place at the O2 Arena in Prague 9, promises to bring the world’s elite skaters to the heart of Europe. As the city prepares to welcome athletes and fans,it’s a fitting moment to reflect on the rich history of figure skating in the region, notably the enduring legacy of eva Romanová.

Romanová, alongside her brother Pavel, formed one of the most iconic ice dancing duos in Czechoslovakian and world figure skating history. Their partnership captivated audiences and set new standards for the discipline. However, their journey wasn’t without its unique challenges.Romanová recently shared insights into the early days of ice dancing, noting the sport’s struggle for recognition.

“At that time, however, dancing on ice – unlike other figure skating disciplines – was not an Olympic category,” romanová explained. It only became an Olympic category in 1976. That’s why we had a hard time looking for additional motivation, and in 1965 we went to the American figure skating revue Holiday on Ice. I worked ther until 1971. This period highlights the dedication required by athletes in emerging sports, often performing in non-conventional venues to hone their craft and gain exposure.

The narrative of Romanová’s life is also marked by personal tragedy and resilience. her brother, Pavel, tragically passed away in a car accident in Tennessee in 1972. Despite this profound loss, Eva Romanová continued her journey in the sport and beyond.

In the United States, she found love and partnership with fellow figure skater and comedian on ice, Jackie Graham. Their life
