WRC Title Showdown: Drivers Sound Alarm Over Hazardous Saudi Arabia Rally Stage
JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia –
As the 2025 World Rally Championship (WRC) season barrels towards its dramatic conclusion this weekend in Saudi Arabia, a chorus of top drivers, including French rally legend Sébastien Ogier, has issued a stark warning about a perilous three-kilometer stretch of the course. This inaugural Saudi Arabian rally, poised to crown the 2025 WRC world champion, faces scrutiny over a specific section that many believe poses an unacceptable safety risk.
Unanimous Concerns Over “Narrow and Treacherous” Section
The final three kilometers of Special Stage 11 (SS11), scheduled for late Friday morning and followed by a second pass in the afternoon (SS14), have become the focal point of driver anxiety. Ogier, a seven-time WRC champion vying for his eighth title, expressed his deep concern, stating, ItS dangerous, becuase there are three kilometers where there is really just room for the car.
Beyond the sheer narrowness, drivers point to the treacherous terrain. It’s a field of stones everywhere with very limited visibility,
added the 41-year-old veteran.there are lots of blind corners with crests, so that means there are lots of places where you can’t even see. And if you have a problem, you have nowhere to stop.
This lack of runoff space is a critical safety concern, reminiscent of past rally incidents where drivers faced severe consequences for minor errors.
“For the Moment, We Have Not Been Listened To”
The sentiment among the drivers is overwhelmingly unified. It’s still very sad to see that we were all unanimous, we agreed to say: come on, we’re taking three kilometers off, it doesn’t change anything in the race frankly, and at least we’re minimizing the risks a little on this special. and regrettably, for the moment, we have not been listened to,
lamented Ogier, highlighting a perceived disconnect between driver safety concerns and race organizers’ decisions.
Thierry Neuville, the reigning 2024 WRC world champion from hyundai, echoed these sentiments. For me it would be justified to remove the last three kilometers, there is unanimity to say that it is indeed dangerous,
he stated shortly after Ogier’s remarks. This widespread agreement among seasoned professionals underscores the gravity of the situation.
Title Race Intensifies Amid Safety Fears
The stakes couldn’t be higher for this weekend’s championship decider. Three Toyota drivers are locked in a fierce battle for the 2025 WRC world crown: briton Elfyn Evans leads the standings with 272 points, closely followed by Ogier with 269 points, and Finn Kalle Rovanperä trailing with 248 points. The outcome of this rally will determine who lifts the coveted trophy.
The controversy surrounding SS11 raises questions about the balance between pushing the boundaries of rally sport and ensuring the well-being of its athletes. While challenging stages are a hallmark of WRC, the unanimous outcry from multiple championship contenders suggests this particular section may cross a critical threshold.
