Dallas, TX – The NFL community is reeling from the devastating loss of former Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marshawn Kneeland, who passed away unexpectedly on Thursday. The news sent shockwaves through the league, especially for those who shared the locker room with him. Cowboys star Micah Parsons, speaking publicly for the first time since the tragedy, urged a collective moment of reflection and a renewed appreciation for life.
“We should all take this time to pray. keep praying – pray for your loved ones, pray for everyone to find peace,” Parsons stated, his voice heavy with emotion. “And then, also continue to check in on your loved ones. This prompted me to contact friends back home, former teammates, to tell them how much we take our time together for granted. Life is so short,so we should really start appreciating it more, loving people properly, being mindful of our intentions, how we treat others and how we accept them.”
The Cowboys were on their bye week, providing a somber backdrop for Parsons’ heartfelt message. For many, the bond forged on the gridiron transcends the game itself. Parsons elaborated on the profound impact of losing a teammate, likening it to the loss of a brother.
“I have to find a way to accept my emotions, to accept everything I feel about his family, my former teammates. Some of my former teammates are devastated. They can’t understand. Losing a teammate is like losing a brother. People don’t realize how close we were. That’s the whole difficulty. Either way, the NFL is like a big family. Whether it’s on the opposing team or the same team, the NFL is a brotherhood. Trying to put that aside is challenging, but we have to find a solution because ther will be enormous pressure on Monday night.”
parsons confirmed he learned of Kneeland’s death early Thursday morning. authorities later revealed that Kneeland died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Frisco Police Department in Texas reported that officers responded to assist in locating a vehicle that had eluded them during a chase that began Wednesday night.
Texas Highway Patrol officers eventually located Kneeland’s vehicle wrecked on the southbound Dallas Parkway near Warren Parkway. According to the report, Kneeland fled the scene on foot, prompting an extensive search involving K-9 units and drones. During the search, authorities were alerted to a disturbing text message Kneeland had reportedly sent to acquaintances.
Approximately three hours after the initial pursuit, Kneeland was discovered deceased from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The circumstances surrounding the tragedy are still under inquiry, but the immediate impact on the NFL family is undeniable.
The loss of Kneeland serves as a stark reminder of the mental health challenges that can affect individuals, even those in the public eye. While the NFL has made strides in addressing mental well-being, this incident underscores the ongoing need for support systems and open conversations within the league and beyond. Fans and players alike are encouraged to reach out to loved ones and seek help if they are struggling.
