The final score was a clear 3-0, despite Erling Haaland missing a penalty in the first half.

In the same half, at 1–0, however, Liverpool thought they had found an equaliser. Virgil van Dijk headed in a corner, but the goal was disallowed when the referees ruled that Andy Robertson – who was offside – was in the way of the goalkeeper’s aim.

Peter Schmeichel couldn’t understand how the goal didn’t stand.

– It’s a bad decision, says the expert in Viaplay’s broadcast, and then continues:

– Who knows if he disturbs the goalkeeper there? Who knows? No. They must be more precise as a rule.

“Wrong decision”

Schmeichel then continued:

– It must be much clearer, we cannot have this discussion. I think it is a bit harsh on Liverpool that the goal is disallowed.

The BBC’s expert Wayne Rooney also criticized the decision.

– I don’t think Andy Robertson delayed Donnarumma’s dive. City’s goalkeeper could see the ball all the way, so I think it was a wrong decision, he says according to BBC.

“It doesn’t matter what I say”

Virgil van Dijk himself was tight-lipped about the situation after the match.

– There is no reason for me to talk about it. The truth is that we lost 0-3 and that it is very heavy, he says Sky Sports.

He then continues:

– It doesn’t matter what I say, because everything I say will end up in the media and the entire national team break will be about my comment on the decision. I’m just focusing on us losing, you can debate whether the goal should have stood.

Isak on the bench

Alexander Isak, who struggled with an injury, had to watch the entire match from the bench.

The Swede was never substituted – even though attacking colleague Hugo Ekitike was replaced.

Manchester City now move up to second place in the Premier League, four points behind Arsenal. Liverpool is in eighth place.
