The evolution of sports video games has been a remarkable journey, and at the forefront of this transformation stands EA Sports FC, formerly known as FIFA. While today it’s a global phenomenon, its roots trace back to groundbreaking innovations that shaped the very essence of virtual sports. One pivotal moment came with the Madden NFL series, which introduced the concept of full team action, moving beyond smaller-scale matches to the immersive 11-on-11 gameplay that defines modern football simulations.
Gordon Bellamy, a veteran of EA Sports, recently shared insights into this pivotal shift and its ripple effect on the FIFA/EA Sports FC franchise. speaking at San Diego Comic Con Malaga, Bellamy highlighted how the Madden license itself implied a certain depth, and how John Madden himself insisted on 11-on-11 gameplay. “Before that, most football games weren’t,” Bellamy explained. “It looked like football, but in reality it was maybe like 5-on-5 or 7-on-7, but he was like, it must feel like football.”
This insistence on realism, Bellamy noted, fundamentally altered the design philosophy. It raised the question of what truly constitutes “fun” in a sports game. Is it a fleeting moment of enjoyment, or a rich, enduring experience akin to following a favorite team’s season? “If you love football,” Bellamy elaborated, “you actually want a very rich experience like football, right? And so you have to design a piece of entertainment, which is it, right? Which is different than I just want a taste.”
Bellamy’s own involvement in the FIFA series proved instrumental in this evolution. As a tester at EA, he was present during the development of the original FIFA, a game that would redefine the genre. At a time when developers grappled with balancing arcade-style action and simulation, FIFA emerged as a title that didn’t force a choice. “FIFA did it,” Bellamy stated. “As if FIFA was a game where you didn’t have to choose. It was spectacularly like watching football, but also fun in the arcade.” This fusion of authentic visual representation and engaging gameplay laid the groundwork for the EA Sports FC we know and love today.
