LOSC: Racism Condemnation – Libération

## LOSC Denounces Racist Fan behavior, vows Strong Action

Lille, France – The French football club Lille Olympic Sporting Club (LOSC) has issued a strong condemnation of racist actions and comments by some of its supporters during recent away matches. The club described the behavior as “unacceptable” and “totally contrary to the values that the club consistently defends and promotes.”

The incidents, which occurred during recent trips to Strasbourg for a Ligue 1 match and to Belgrade for a Europa League fixture, have drawn widespread criticism. Images and videos circulating on social media have highlighted the offensive nature of the actions. In one instance, following Lille’s defeat against Strasbourg,a fan was heard using a racial slur against Strasbourg supporters. In Belgrade, a supporter was photographed making a gesture associated with neo-Nazis, a clear violation of the club’s ethical standards.

LOSC expressed its disappointment, stating in a press release, “Despite the numerous awareness-raising and prevention initiatives implemented by LOSC to combat all forms of discrimination, certain individuals deliberately choose to take advantage of travel to hijack the context of football in order to express their hatred.” the club emphasized that these individuals will never be welcomed within the LOSC community and cannot be considered true supporters.

The club also acknowledged the positive role played by the majority of its fanbase, noting that “most of these behaviors” were “spontaneously denounced by the [véritables] LOSC supporters themselves.” This self-policing by genuine fans, utilizing the club’s reporting platform and social media, underscores a commitment to a positive and inclusive football environment.

This is not the first time LOSC has faced such issues. In January 2024, the club dealt with racist comments directed at Black or Arab players and supporters. At the time, a fan was quoted as saying, “You are only good for picking cotton,” prompting the club to announce its intention to file a complaint.

LOSC is reiterating its commitment to legal action. The club is currently working on identifying the individuals involved to file multiple complaints. Moreover, those found responsible, who “cast unjustified discredit on all the enthusiasts supporting the club with respect and dignity” and “have no place in football,” are expected to face swift stadium bans. This firm stance aims to protect the integrity of the sport and ensure that football remains a space for respect and camaraderie.
