Lio Aprili: Remembering a Photographer & His Historic Work

GROSSETOHe passed away in silence, in the embrace of his loved ones who did not leave him alone for a second in these last weeks of his life. Lio Aprili88 years old, died last night around 2 in his bed. For a few weeks the illness that had struck him had become fierce. With Lio a decent, gentle, kind person leaves. Above all, polite: never a word out of place, always available and professional. Yes because Lio Aprili was a I photographone of the first who decided to open a photography shop in the 1950s, when those images still told a lot. Born on December 21, 1937, he started taking photographs in the 1950s and basically never stopped. In 1958, after having learned the trade from his older brothers, Leo and Luigi, he decided to try to ‘walk’ on his own and opened the shop in via Sauro, always open and carried on by his son Giacomo, also a professional photographer who continues his collaboration with The Nation. From the end of the 70s, Lio Aprili became the historic photographer of The Nation Of Grossetothe newspaper that he embellished for many years with shots that have gone down in history: from those of the disastrous flood of 1966, some unpublished, then through those of the historic maxi-trial that took place in the building in via Lago di Varano. Without forgetting the great sporting events of the 80s, such as the victory of the first championship in baseball by the BBC Grosseto team: Lio, on the night of the success in Rimini alla ‘bella’, was in Piazza Albegna taking unforgettable photos. There are also many images at the Zecchini stadium of Us Grosseto. And then the ‘news’ of the newspaper where Lio was always present and punctual. Now, that fundamental work is carried on by Giacomo. Aprili leaves behind his wife Vera, his children Giacomo and Lucia and his grandchildren Pavel and Chiara. Moved by the memory of Fiorenzo Bucci, former department head of The Nationwho has worked with Lio for many years. “I remember him as a good person who made humility and availability his best qualities. It is also due to figures like Lio that, in past years, newspaper editorial offices have experienced seasons of growth and have become important and appreciated. May he rest in peace”. Tomorrow at 2.30 pm the funeral will be celebrated at the Sterpeto cemetery. His body will then be cremated. Deepest condolences to Giacomo and his family The Nation.
