Karlsson: Olympic Pursuit at Global Series

After a couple of challenging seasons following his high-profile trade, defenseman Karlsson appears to be rediscovering his elite form. The veteran blueliner, who arrived in Pittsburgh on August 6, 2023, from the San Jose Sharks, had previously showcased his offensive prowess wiht the Sharks, notching an notable 101 points (25 goals, 76 assists) in 82 games during the 2022-23 season. This remarkable scoring output made him the first defenseman since Brian Leetch in 1991-92 to reach the 100-point plateau in a single season. His stellar play also earned him his third Norris Trophy, adding to his accolades from 2012 and 2015 with the Ottawa Senators.

However, the transition to Pittsburgh saw a dip in his offensive production. In the 2023-24 regular season, Karlsson recorded 56 points (11 goals, 45 assists) in 82 games, followed by 53 points (11 goals, 42 assists) last season.Compounding these numbers were defensive struggles, with his minus-24 rating last season ranking among the sixth worst in the NHL.

Under the guidance of new head coach Dan Muse, who took the helm this summer, KarlssonS game seems to have been revitalized. The Swedish defenseman is now displaying a renewed confidence that is evident at both ends of the ice.

Muse shared his initial impressions of Karlsson, stating, The last few years, maybe he didn’t feel like his game was exactly where he wanted it to be, but honestly, that wasn’t even part of the conversation. He added, It was just so exciting to have the chance to get to know him, to have the possibility to work together with him. I’ve seen what he’s done in the league for a long time, so the expectation is that he’s a world-class back and he’s going to be, and he’s shown that. I think he has played really well, and it has been at both ends of the ice.

Karlsson acknowledges the scrutiny surrounding his and the Penguins’ improved performance this season but suggests there isn’t a single, definitive reason for the turnaround. I don’t really think there’s one specific thing to point to, he commented. I think we went into this year, everyone was motivated to get better and have a good year personally. We had a good training camp. I think the coaching staff has done a good job of preparing everyone and giving everyone what they need and, obviously, we’ve been able to win some games early here and that makes everything a little bit easier.

He continued, It makes it easier to move forward and build on the good things and clean up some of the other things. So I think its just a mix of a lot of things. It just happened to fall into place for us. I don’t really care why it happened. I’m just glad it did.

Karlsson’s resurgence this season has substantially bolstered his chances for a spot on Sweden’s Olympic team. Just a year ago, questions were being raised, both in Sweden and North America, about his inclusion in the 4 Nations Face-Off.He silenced those doubts with a standout performance in the February 2025 tournament, which featured powerhouses like the USA,Canada, and Finland.

During the tournament, Karlsson shared the team lead in scoring for Tre Kronor with forward Lucas Raymond of the Detroit red Wings, tallying three points (1 goal, 2 assists) in three games, while averaging 18:09 of ice time.

Predators forward Filip Forsberg, who is also expected to be selected for Sweden’s Olympic squad, praised Karlsson’s performance. Everyone who watched that tournament saw what a good player he is, how he stepped forward. He was probably our best player during that tournament. People questioned it, whether it’s here (in Sweden) or at home in the US, and he played incredibly well. It probably gave him a lot of confidence as well, Forsberg remarked.
