I read the other day Jim Jarmusch say that in his films he had dedicated himself to telling what happens when nothing happens. Coffee and cigarettes all the time. Taxi trips that apparently no one cares about, as in Night on Earth. (presumably) dead times resurrected by cinema. Indie things, we think: that doesn’t happen in football. It feels like the ball breaks that window because very important things are happening in football at all hours, an earthquake at every moment. But suddenly the famous window (the least abrasive name) arrives for the qualifying matches of the Worldand many protest because the world stops. Nothing happens, they say.
What a bore. And it turns out that, if you like football, the reality is that only 10 games disappear from the program of more than 10,000 official matches, from juniors to First Divisionwhich we have in Spain every weekend. No problem? Well yes it happens. Life goes on, kid. Don’t forget to live.
Sorry for the digression, but when I hear that about “national team soccer,” as if they were playing another sport, I remember my grandfather shouting at the transistor while listening to the radio say “what a great game changer.” Bernd Schuster“, when the blonde German made a change of orientation with the ball: “And now what are they playing, badminton?” I almost miss it, given the current babazorrista and oliver ultra-correction that leads us to pronounce “Athletic Club“, with its consonant perfection, all the time. I long for that slight imperfection, that popular everyday life. And that we can say that the orientation of the game changes by taking the ball to the other side however we want without being called idiots.
