Etiënne Vaessen was behind the bar for FC Groningen against FC Twente. The Surinamese goalie received a red card in the cup match against Sparta Rotterdam, but it was dismissed. Against the Tukkers Vaessen immediately asserted himself again and fought a number of nice duels with Ricky van Wolfswinkel.
In the match between FC Twente and FC Groningen, the duels between Vaessen and Van Wolfswinkel had their own chapter. The two were constantly looking for each other and were talking to each other all the time. “Maybe he is trying to provoke something. He hands out something and takes a little,” Vaessen says afterwards ESPN.
The criticism and fierce duels help the Surinamese goalkeeper on the field. “If a lot of people are against me, then I get even better. But of course it has to remain normal after the match. I’ve played against Ricky many times, it always goes like this. When we meet each other in Ibiza, we have a beer together. It’s a bit part of the game,” the goalkeeper laughs.
Groningen coach Lukkien is asked whether Vaessen needs those confrontations. “Yes, he also regularly looks for that with me. We know each other so well now that we need it every now and then. Then it chafes a bit. If you rub a little well and thoroughly, it will shine again,” says the trainer.
