Fuerteventura Archers Make Their Mark on the World Stage in Luxembourg

Strassen, Luxembourg – The international archery scene got a taste of fuerteventura’s talent this past weekend as seven archers from the San Crispin archery club of antigua showcased their skills at the second stage of the World Series of indoor archery in Strassen, Luxembourg. The contingent, part of a larger Spanish team of 12, proved that dedication and training are paying off, with some impressive performances that have the club buzzing.

The Fuerteventura contingent, affectionately referred to as “majoreros” (a term for inhabitants of Fuerteventura), represented a critically important portion of the Spanish effort. The team included Mick Reliham in the Veterans Compound Bow category, Cristian Cherchi competing in Senior Olympic Bow, and a strong U21 Olympic Bow presence with Ancor Jorge and Hugo Fernández. Giada Cherchi also competed in the U21 Olympic Bow division, while Gisela González and Tigana Florizoone battled it out in the U21 Compound bow.

For Mick Reliham and Giada Cherchi, this event marked their international debut, and they certainly didn’t disappoint, delivering promising results that hint at a bright future. While Cristian, Ancor, and Hugo gave their all, they narrowly missed out on qualifying for the playoff rounds, a testament to the fierce competition at this elite level.

Though, the real story of the weekend belonged to Gisela González and Tigana Florizoone. Both archers successfully navigated the cutoff eliminators, earning their spots in the head-to-head elimination rounds.Gisela faced a tough challenge in her first match, falling to the formidable Lea tonus of Luxembourg, currently ranked third in the world.

But Tigana Florizoone truly stole the show, demonstrating a steely resolve and a clear intention to compete at the highest level. She qualified in 8th place and found herself up against Croatia’s Hana Arapovic, who had achieved the exact same score in the qualifiers. The tension was palpable as their match unfolded.

“It was a nail-biter, a real back-and-forth,” commented one observer familiar with the sport. “You could feel the pressure with every arrow.”

The Croatian took an early lead by a single point after the first set, a slim advantage that held until the fourth set when Tigana managed to equalize the score. The final set was a true reflection of their equal footing, with both archers delivering a flawless performance, resulting in a 141-141 tie. The outcome then rested on the tiebreaker arrow. In a display of remarkable composure under pressure, Tigana shot a perfect 10, while her rival managed a 9, securing Tigana’s advancement to the quarterfinals.

In the quarterfinals, Tigana faced the top-ranked competitor, Jessie Van Den Munckhof of the Netherlands. While the first set was incredibly close, the Dutch archer’s extensive experience in these high-stakes contests ultimately proved decisive, and she secured the victory.

Despite the quarterfinal exit,Tigana’s performance was a significant achievement, showcasing her potential on the world stage.

Xavier Florizoone, the team’s coach, expressed his satisfaction with the archers’ progress. The results we’ve seen here clearly indicate that we are on the right track with our training and progress program. he stated.

The San Crispin Club extended their gratitude to the Antigua city Council, especially the Department of Sports, for their unwavering support. We are incredibly thankful for the excellent support from the Antigua City Council, especially the Department of Sports. We will continue to work diligently and prepare our San Crispín archers for continued growth and enhancement. Our thanks also go to the Fuerteventura Town Council for their backing.

This strong showing in Luxembourg has undoubtedly put Fuerteventura archery on the map. The archers are now setting their sights on their next challenge: the Canary Islands Indoor Championship, which will be held in Tenerife.

For U.S. Sports Enthusiasts: Imagine the intensity of an Olympic archery final, but within the controlled environment of an indoor arena. The precision required is akin to a golfer sinking a long putt under immense pressure or a basketball player hitting a game-winning free throw. The mental fortitude displayed by archers like Tigana Florizoone, especially in tiebreaker situations, is a testament to the psychological aspect of these sports, often overlooked but crucial for success.
