Half of the winners’ goals were scored by Wyatt Johnston, who scored one goal and assisted on the other three.
Faksa scored the first point in the 16th minute. The Czech forward pushed the puck into the renumbering along the right fence to Nathan Bastian, who made it 3-0 with a swing from the right circle. Both of them repeated the goal cooperation once more at the end of the match.
Faksa won the puck behind the goal and promptly finished at the left post. The puck didn’t go into the goal, but Bastian adjusted the score from the stop to make it 8:3. The Czech attacker improved his season tally to ten points (1+9).
“For players who don’t get as many chances, they have to finish. I don’t know when I’ll be outnumbered two-on-one, so I wanted to shoot as well as possible,” commented Bastian, who had only one goal before the game, on his first goal.
David Tomášek played almost sixteen minutes for Edmonton. Despite the heavy defeat, he added one positive point to the +/- stat for his participation on the ice in goals scored and conceded.
Jamie Benn opened the scoring and became the second player to score four hundred goals for Dallas. Mike Modano leads the all-time club record with 557 hits.
“It kind of came together today. We got off to a great start. You always want to start games like that, especially against a strong team like Edmonton,” said Benn, who missed most of the first quarter of the regular season. The Dallas captain complained that he was not feeling well in the last preseason game before the start of the NHL season. Doctors discovered a damaged lung, so he underwent pneumothorax surgery.
Edmonton withdrew goalkeeper Stuart Skinner from the game after the first period, who conceded four times out of eight shots. He was replaced by Calvin Pickard, who allowed four goals from 22 attempts by the opponent.
“Goals conceded is a team thing,” said Edmonton leader Connor McDavid. “It’s hard for goalkeepers to look good when the players in front of them are playing below their capabilities. It doesn’t matter who’s in goal. I feel sorry for both of them, I feel bad about it,” he added.
Edmonton, a finalist in the last year of the NHL, is only tenth in the Western Conference, out of the playoffs. He won only 10 of 25 games in the season.
“I don’t have an answer for that. It wasn’t good from start to finish today,” said Edmonton’s other forward Leon Draisaitl. “It’s worrying. It’s been almost thirty games and we can’t seem to figure out how to play. I don’t know what else to say. So far our performances are not good enough, it’s not enough,” he added.
